Impact Reporting: A Checklist
In the last few blogs, we have covered the gamut of topics on writing compelling impact reports - from knowing your audience, to leveraging frameworks, to choosing your report type, and integrating numbers and stories.
But I can’t tell you how often I hear folks say "These reports are daunting. How do I even get started?
Anyone who’s written an Impact Report knows that these steps I’m sharing are an oversimplification of the complex cat-herding required to get one of these reports across the finish line. But hopefully this checklist can offer some support in smoothing the process.
Step 1 - Audience & Goals - Take time to clarify your audience, who they are and what they need. Then clarify what you want them to do, and if there are other business goals you need to consider. Based on your reflections, identify the report type and tone you want it to have.
Step 2 - Frameworks - Choose a framework that illustrates what you are doing via your social impact programs and why. This communicates your purpose and also provides structure for your report content. Consider adding a visual element to aid the reader.
Step 3 - Data - Whether you are at the start of your impact reporting journey, or if you’ve been doing it for a while, data plays a central role in reports. Adjust your data expectations based on your organization’s maturity/expertise level. Start small and build as your grow your team, portfolio and expertise.
Step 4 - Stories - As you select stories to include, ask yourselves what type of story it is and how it is furthering your desired narrative and goals.
Step 5 - Add finishing touches
Visualize your data and add graphic design for ease of reading and visual appeal
Name your community partners and collaborations
